Belmond Maroma opened in summer 2023 after a major refurbishment and a stunning reimagining of its interiors and food offering. With such attention to detail, the property has still retained its authentic atmosphere and soul. We loved this property pre-refurb too with its enviable location at the end of a long, gravel path meandering through mangroves with spider monkeys jumping from tree to tree. WHY?
The hotel feels more like a friend’s pristine hacienda sitting at the edge of the most beautiful beach. The story here dates back to the 1970s, when the Mexican architect Jose Luis Moreno found the virgin beach 25 miles south of Cancun, which was then empty of resorts. He built his dream house and you can still feel the magic of the 1970s in the air. Well-known interior designer, Tara Bernard continued Moreno’s work with local Mayan craftspeople bringing in weavers, ceramicists, wood carvers and artist from all over Mexico.
